Over the past few months, I have been training my hair to be able to go longer without washing it. By washing it less and less overtime the scalp begins to slow down the production of oils so it doesn’t look as greasy as fast! It takes some time and patience to get to a point where you don’t have to wash your hair every day or every other day but it is so worth it! I’ve noticed my hair is so much healthier overall!
I originally started the process of training my hair because I was getting so sick of feeling like I needed to wash my hair after every workout, which is 4-5x a week. After I wash my hair I have to actually do it or it takes on a life of its own so too much time was being taken up during the week showering then doing my hair, not to mention the damage that was being done! I wanted to figure out a way to be able to work out whenever I wanted to while still being able to wear my hair how I like it.
Depending on how often you wash your hair, I would start by adding one more day in that you don’t wash. Add in some dry shampoo on the day you don’t wash it and do that for a week or so. Then add in another day where you don’t wash your hair and continue doing that. As you get comfortable with the process and your scalp starts to get used to fewer washes you will be able to go as long as a week (in my experience)! The longest I have gone is 7 days but that was pushing it a little. I would say every 5-6 days is comfortable for me. Now, there are weeks that I need to wash my hair a few more times than others depending on what I am doing but in general, I like to try to go as long as I can!
I am going to share a day by day look at what I do to keep my hair grease-free for as long as possible, I am also sharing the products I use to achieve this! I will be as specific as possible so you can try this and see if it works for you!
Day 1
I shower, blow dry and curl my hair with this base and this iron — head to my Instagram to see a tutorial on how I curl my hair and to see how I add texturizing hair spray to create some volume! These tools are amazing because I don’t have to continue to curl my hair every day because the curls hold so well! They are pricey but they are SO worth it! If you are not in the market for a pricey curling iron I highly recommend this one. I have had it for years and you cannot beat the price! I have cut the amount of heat I put on my hair weekly in half! After I am done doing my hair I like to add a little bit of this hair oil to calm down any flyaways and add some shine to my hair. This is a super dry oil so it will not be greasy or gross at all! Before bed, I comb my hair to distribute any oils throughout my hair. It is so important to make sure your hair is always combed and tangle free. Try not to touch your hair a lot because the oils on your hands will transfer! I sleep on a silk pillowcase which helps prevent weird creases from forming overnight. Lastly, every morning I add Vital Proteins into my coffee, the collagen helps grow your hair and nails while helping my skin to look radiant! I highly recommend this step as I have seen significant hair growth!
Day 2
When I wake up I add a little dry shampoo (Click here for the clean option I have been loving!) to my root then comb my hair out and tease it to bring life back to my hair and that’s really all that needs to be done! When working out I put my hair in a low ponytail in these hair ties only, they don’t crease your hair and they prevent tangling. When I am done working out I take it out and when I get home I comb out my hair. I will take a body shower and put my hair up in a
Day 3
From here on out, I pretty much do the same as I did on day 2 but each day I add a little more dry shampoo throughout the rest of my hair and add the texturizing hair spray in the morning to pump up the volume! I will usually make it to 5 or 6 days until I start to feel like my hair starts to get unruly. When that happens I will pull my hair back in french braids to get another night/day out if it then after I workout I will wash it!
After about a month of doing this I like to double cleanse my hair to get all of the build up of product out of my hair. So I will find a night
You guys know how important clean beauty products are to me and I use as many products that are toxin free as possible. I have not found all clean hair products but I am always testing different things out to make the clean swap. One clean product I am testing out right now is the Beautycounter Volume and Shape Volumizing Mist and I have been loving it! I will spray it in my roots and I can hear it kind of bubble, then I will tease it. I will definitely be adding it into my routine more and more and I will update you on exactly how after a month or so! I am also on the hunt for a clean dry shampoo that actually works so I will keep you posted on that as well!
