In our screened-in porch, we have a big wall that is covered with vertical siding with windows on each side. I have been brainstorming what to do to for a while and I knew I wanted to incorporate plants into it somehow. On Instagram, I got some inspiration from @Melissa.Frusco and put my own spin on it to fit my aesthetic, definitely check out her blog post too! It was very easy and cost right around $50 to complete, you can also customize it for any size space very easily!
The Supplies:
The nice part about this is you only need a few things to make this happen! We decided to go monotone and get a white vinyl lattice, it ended up fitting perfect so we didn’t have to cut it. If you do need to cut it to fit your space you just need a hand saw! You will also need hanging pots, I decided to do one on each side and I found these for $35 for the pair. They come with a string to hang them on but we decided to use a white steel chain that we cut ourselves at home depot! Lastly, we got two different sized hooks to hang the lattice and the pots. For hanging the lattice we used the 2 1/4 hook because it holds more weight and for the hanging pots we used the 1 1/4 hook! We hung the lattice an inch off the wall and then the pots were three inches out from the wall right on the edge of the lattice.
Planting the Pots with Vines:
Usually, I would drill holes into the bottom of the pot so excess water can escape but since these plants will be hanging and attached to the lattice I cannot do that. I don’t want the water to drain in the porch so I found a bunch of rocks in the back yard and layered them on the bottom of the pot then added the soil and planted the vine so the water has somewhere to go if I overwater it!
For the vine, you want to make sure to find one that is a climber, does well in shade (depending on where you are putting it), and is fairly easy to take care of! I ended up with a heartleaf philodendron (a species of Arum), it is an evergreen climbing plant with heartshaped leaves. It is very easy to take care of, is good in light shade, has average water needs, and is a climber.
The Final Product:
I am so excited for the vines to grow across the lattice and have lots of greenery weaving in and out! We have already seen some growth so it seems like the plant is happy and thriving in the space! I will post updates as it continues to grow to share the progress of how it looks, I am hoping it works!
xo,
Let me know what you think!
